The first outdoor Way of the Cross in the United States is located at the St. Donatus Catholic Church. In 1862 the Way of the Cross was completed thanks to Fr. Francis Winger’s idea. Since 1865 the stations began to include the Pieta Chapel, which was built with funds by Fr. Michael Flammang. Yearly in the afternoon of Good Friday, the Parish leads a public Outdoor Way of the Cross. At anytime, tourists may venture up the hill on the ½-¾ mile dirt path and end at the Pieta Chapel located at the top of the hill.
